Bio
Born and raised in China, Lily Liu’s artistic journey began with a deep appreciation for traditional craftsmanship. She discovered her passion for ceramics in 2000, a path that eventually led her to explore fiber art while pursuing her graduate studies at Kent State University, Ohio. Her work navigates the delicate balance between chance and intention, mindfulness and spontaneity.
In recent years, Lily has focused on sustainability, incorporating reuse, recycling, and repurposing materials to minimize waste. Guided by her motto, “Make every minute count,” she finds creative fulfillment in the quiet moments carved out from the demands of motherhood, marriage, and artistic ambition. For her, the act of making is both a meditative process and a means of reclaiming time and space.
Lily holds an MFA in Crafts from Kent State University, Ohio, as well as a BFA in Ceramics and a BA in Psychology from the University of Manitoba, Canada. Her fiber and ceramic works have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Artist Statement
Working with fiber art provides me with a unique medium to explore the balance between softness and strength. My process is deeply meditative, guided by repetition and rhythm. Each stitch, weave, fold, bead, or knot marks the passage of time—a quiet testament to the slow, intentional labor of transforming an idea into form. This repetition mirrors life’s own cycles—filled with routines, transitions, and the unseen work that shapes our days. In each piece, I carve out moments from the demands of motherhood, marriage, and creative ambition. The act of making becomes a form of reclaiming space and time, a quiet assertion of presence amid the complexities of daily life.
Creating fiber jewelry allows me to push the boundaries of material and form, offering an experience that is both tactile and symbolic. These pieces are more than adornment; they embody fragility, resilience, and transformation. Through my work, I hope to evoke a sense of intimacy and connection, inviting the wearer to reflect on the strength and beauty that emerge from even the most delicate threads.
